There are several interesting finds from American fiction on coming of age. The newly added selection, for convenience of the reader placed up front below for the time being, embraces no less than nine books and three television series. These works show a considerable variation with respect to content. They cover topics such as individual challenge, collective solidarity, gay love and straight infatuation, finally also a few extraordinary contexts.

Individuele uitdaging

Individual challenge

The tradition of The Catcher in the Rye lives on in James Dashner's Maze Runner, whereas the craving for friendship takes central stage in Donna Tartt's Goldfinch. Special mention is warranted of the pioneering Netflix series Atypical, indeed about autism.
James Dashner, The Maze Runner (2007), vertaald als De labyrintrenner (2014), verfilmd in 2014, 2 vervolgdelen. In this science fiction story eighteen-year old Thomas inexplicably ends up in a valley with a closed-off community of only boys. He reveals himself as their leader in attempts to find the exit through the maze surrounding the valley. He makes friends as well as enemies among the boys, he learns a lot about himself from fulfilling his leadership role. The story evokes reminiscences with the boy community in William Golding's coming of age novel Lord of the Flies.
Donna Tartt, The Goldfinch (2013), vertaald als Het puttertje (2013), verfilmd 2019. The young adolescent Theo loses his mother at a terrorist attack in New York and has to move to his long-time absent father in the gambling city Las Vegas. There he finds his bosom friend Boris, a strange, slightly older boy of diffuse East European origin. Their friendship as teenagers in Las Vegas, their separation as Theo leaves town and their reunion as partners in dubious business form the main thread of a plot with a chain of dramatic events. The friendship of teenage boys is rarely with greater accuracy depicted in fiction.
Het verhaal doet sterk denken aan Mark Haddons The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The Netflix series Atypical (2019, 3 seasons) retells the story of the autistic Sam, growing up in an average American family and on the verge of moving from high school to college. The autistic side of his behaviour is portrayed with admirable empathy and insight, as are his relations to the family members, his best friend and –not to forget– girls. The plot invites strong associations with Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The fifteen-year old Christopher in that coming of age novel and Sam in the Netflix series irrevocably both arouse feelings of warm sympathy among readers and viewers respectively.

Collectieve solidariteit

Collective solidarity

The coming of age does not take place in virtual isolation. Nevertheless, novelists usually adopt the perspective of the sole individual without penetrating into the dynamics of a group of peers in the same phase of life. A striking exception to the rule is Donna Tartt's debut novel The Secret History. Long-term series extending over several seasons and scores of episodes offer more opportunities to present a collective of personages whilst at the same time giving insights into the emotions and thoughts of isolated individuals. The Netflix series Riverdale and Elite in particular testify to that effect.
Donna Tartt, The Secret History (1992),. vertaald als De verborgen geschiedenis (1993). Eighteen-year old Richard attends a small liberal arts college in New England. He is incorporated into a group of students, four boys and one girl, who under supervision of an eccentric professor focuses on a study of Classical Antiquity. Their gatherings as a group are full of tensions and there is even the occurrence of a suspicious death. Therefore, this story is to be considered an inverted crime story. The crime is known from the start, the author's concern is with the run-up and aftermath. The jumble of emotions experienced by the protagonist and within the group is revealed with precision.
Netflix, Riverdale (2017-2019, 4 seizoenen). This long-running television series focuses on the entangled fate of four young persons in the fictitious town Riverdale. The four are: the honest but hesitant Archie from a working-class background, the elitist Veronica from a rich business family, the shrewd Jughead from the underworld and the sensible Betty from an average middle-class family. The relationship of the two boys with their fathers is of singular importance. The coming of age element is most clearly apparent in the story about Jughead who is even introduced with a wink to The Catcher in the Rye as 'our own Holden Caulfied'!
Netflix, Elite (2018-2020, 4 seizoenen). The plot in this Spanish television series is situated in and around a fashionable secondary school for high society. In the event, however, there is a mixture of students from different social and economic backgrounds. They also all have their own secret desires. Guzman is from a rich family, Polo has two lesbians as mothers, Samuel is of humble descent, Nadia and Omar are from an Islamic background, Ander is the headmaster's son. This lends itself very well for a plot ripe with dramatic complications. The coming of age element is the most emphatically present in the story about Ander, a serious boy struggling with loyalties to his friends and his own sexual orientation.

Ruime aandacht wordt hieraan gegeven in meerdere recente romans, waaronder André Acimans Call Me by Your Name, Adam Silvera's More Happy Than Not en Ocean Vuongs On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous.

Gay love and straight infatuation

Issues of sexuality and falling in love are usually inextricably linked to coming of age. This applies all the more when the individual in question is struggling with a homosexual orientation. Discovering and accepting that fact then readily becomes decisive in shaping the process of coming of age. Ample attention is given to this in several recent novels, including André Aciman's Call Me by Your Name, Adam Silvera's More Happy Than Not and Ocean Vuong's On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. At the same time, there is of course also ample attention in fiction for successive crushes among heterosexual boys and girls. The candid account by a young woman constitutes the principal part in Jenny Han's novel
To All the Boys I've Loved Before.
André Aciman, Call Me by Your Name (2007), vertaald als Noem me bij jouw naam in 2007, verfilmd in 2017. Seventeenth-year old Elio is a talented boy living at the Italian Riviera. During his summer holidays the slightly older American Oliver stays as a lodger in his parents' home. The friendship between Elio and Oliver is marked by the familiar attraction, apprehension and secrecy of the game of love. The reaction of Elio's parents is especially interesting here. It is a beautiful, romantic story that shows in an authentic way what coming of age under such circumstances means in terms of personal development. In the film the part of the protagonist is played by Timothée Chalamet.
Adam Silvera, More Happy Than Not (2015),. vertaald als Meer gelukkig dan niet in 2019. The sixteen-year old Aaron is of Puerto Rican descent and grows up in a poor section of the Bronx in New York. He has a girlfriend but falls under the spell of a new boy, Thomas, in an adjacent apartment complex. An extraordinary futuristic component of Aaron's emotional development is a treatment allowing manipulation of memory. It transpires that in the past Aaron was alternately gay and straight. Because of the social environment and the use of language the story gains the character of a highly contemporary account of coming of age in the twenty-first century.
Ocean Vuong, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (2019),. vertaald als Op aarde schitteren we even in 2019. This is a remarkable coming of age story about a boy of Vietnamese refugee descent growing up in Hartford, Connecticut, known by his nickname 'Little Dog'. As a seasonal worker in the countryside he makes friends with a boy his own age called Trevor. A passionate love relationship develops but it cannot last. This story demonstrates that there is a brief interlude between carefree childhood and adult conventions that may offer opportunities for experiments and experiences that are possible neither before nor after.
Jenny Han, To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2014), vertaald als Aan alle jongens van wie ik hield in 2016, Netflix-film in 2018, daarna 2 vervolgfilms. Netflix film in 2018, 2 sequel films. The sixteen-year old Laura Jean is of Korean-American descent and lives in Virginia. She has already been in love five times and secretly draws up reports about it. Without her knowing this documentation reaches the boys concerned. She begins a faked love relationship with one of them, Peter, which results in a complicated triangle drama with the neighbouring boy Josh, the actual target of her infatuation.

Buitengewone omgevingsfactoren

Extraordinary contexts

The coming of age does not always take place under harmonious circumstances. Sometimes the shift to adulthood is overshadowed by an exceptional or even gloomy wider context. That can happen with serious drug addiction as in David Sheff's Beautiful Boy or in connection with crime and violence as in Gillian Flynn's
Dark Places.
This is the poignant story told by a father about his fight against his son Nic's addiction to crystal meth. The story takes place in and nearby Los Angeles. Nic is an intelligent but also hypersensitive boy of eighteen. His excessive use of drugs is inextricably linked to his reaching adulthood. He testifies himself to that in a complementary book of his own, Nicolas Sheff, Tweak (2008). He was seeking liberation but lost his youth; he grew prematurely old while still so young. In the film Nic is played by Timothée Chalamet. An extraordinary reader's and viewer's experience.
This is a classic thriller about a multiple murder within a family in rural Kansas, very much in the tradition of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. The story is told by a woman who managed to escape getting killed. The true protagonist, however, is her unjustly convicted brother Ben who at the time was fifteen years old. His puzzling behaviour and ambivalent emotions preceding the tragedy form an authentic account of coming of age.

There is a proliferation of coming-of-age novels and related fiction in the contemporary American literature; each selection inevitably becomes somewhat arbitrary. Here are ten books more which together demonstrate the considerable variety within this genre.

Novels from the 1970s, written by Robert Newton Peck and Richard Yates, are selected to underscore the continuity with classical works.
Then I turn to three new trends. One refers to gender. Lois Lowry, Rebecca Wolff and John Green have all followed in the footsteps of Harper Lee with a young woman as protagonist. The idea that a coming-of-age story is about a boy is since long outdated.
Robert Newton Peck, A Day No Pigs Would Die (1972). In 1994 verscheen een vervolg, getiteld Thirteen-year old Robert Peck lives at a remote farm in Vermont in the early 1920s. His family belongs to the Protestant sect of the Shakers and his father makes a living from slaughtering pigs. Robert grows up in poverty. He adopts a piglet that he baptizes as 'Pinky' and that he tries to keep out of his father's hands as long as possible. This book stirred up much commotion in the United States because of its explicit sexual language. A sequel appeared in 1994 entitled A Part of the Sky.
Richard Yates, A Good School (1978)., vertaald als Een goede school (2014). Shortly after Pearl Harbor, fifteen-year old William Grove becomes a student at an obscure boarding school in New England. Joining the armed forces is awaiting him and his classmates after graduation. Masturbation plays a significant part in the interaction among the boys at the boarding school. Unlike most coming-of-age novels, part of the story is told by William's teachers.
Lois Lowry, Number the Stars (1989), verfilmd in 2012. The young teenage girl Annemarie Johansen lives in Copenhagen during the German occupation. She gets involved in helping Jewish refugees get to Sweden. The novel is based on historical facts. Annemarie's participation is emotionally charged as her best friend, Ellen Rosen, is Jewish. This novel was in 1990 awarded as a 'most distinguished contribution' to American fiction for children. Yet, the serious theme and the process of coming-of-age make the story suitable for an adult audience as well. The title refers to a religious hymn.
Rebecca Wolff, The Beginners (2011)., vertaald als De beginners (2011). Ginger Pritt, who is fifteen, is fed up with life in her boring hometown in Massachusetts. She is intrigued by a newly arrived couple, Theo and Raquel Motherwell. This contact brings about a conflict with her parents. At the same time, she becomes curious whether the newcomers really are the persons they pretend to be. This is one of very few coming-of-age novels where magic plays a part.
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars (2012), vertaald als Een weeffout in onze sterren (2012), verfilmd in 2014. De titel verwijst naar made into a movie in 2014. Sixteen-year old Lancaster suffers from cancer. Through a support group she gets to know Augustus Waters, who is seventeen and who has had one leg amputated. Their love relationship develops in the shadow of approaching death. The plot includes a visit to a weird, unpleasant writer in Amsterdam. This book is remarkable, not only because a male author is writing about a female, but also on account of the melodramatic theme. The title is a reference to Shakespeare.
The second area, where we signal a tendency towards innovation, is that of homosexuality. The earlier coming-of-age literature regularly contains homo-erotic undertones like in A Separate Peace by John Knowles. But this theme has warranted a more explicit treatment as in the novels by Stephen Chbosky and Karl Soehnlein. It is worth noting that much gay fiction incorporates a coming-of-age element in the story which more often than not is overshadowed by matters such as doubts about and acceptance of a homosexual orientation.
Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999), vertaald als De belevenissen van een muurbloem (2011), verfilmd in 2012. Charlie is a shy, introvert boy of fifteen in the 1990s attending high school in Pittsburgh. He has two older friends, Patrick, who has a secret gay relationship, and Sam whose boyfriend is a brute. Charle suffers a nervous breakdown after a number of emotional ups and downs. In the end, however, he regains his stability and finds peace with his life and the world. The novel was removed from some school libraries in the United States because of the gay theme.
Karl Soehnlein, The World of Normal Boys (2000). The story unfolds in New Jersey in the late 1970s. The protagonist, Robin MacKenzie, already at the age of thirteen realizes that he is different from other boys. He hangs out with another teenage boy, Scott Schatz, with a rough family background. Robin's family is struck by a fatal accident with repercussions for the entire family. A sequel appeared in 2010, entitled Robin and Ruby, in which Robin figures as a self-confident gay man of twenty who is very close to his sister Ruby.
A third, recent trend focuses on the tensions between achievement and affection for teenagers in contemporary American society. Examples include the novel by Tim Tharp (best known from the movie) and by Chad Harbach (which deserves to be known better).
Tim Tharp, The Spectacular Now (2008), film in 2013. Sutter is on the surface the ideal eighteen-year old high school student. His weak spot is excessive drinking. His love story with the unconventional Aimee confronts him with unexpected challenges from which he learns a great deal.
Seventeen-year old Henry Skrimshander is the star baseball player on the team of a small college in the Midwest. He encounters the challenge of continuous success and gets involved in a number of complicated relationships. The reader keeps wishing he'll grow from the experience and make it. Interestingly, the story is partly told from the perspective of adjoining characters. A strong read.
Recently three highly contemporary novels were added to American coming of age literature. Notwithstandig increasing variation in recent years, the protagonist is in all three novels pictured as a sensitive, likeable boy of seventeen. There is surely sufficient drama in these stories. 13 Reasons Why is all about a suicide in the immediate circle of friends of the protagonist. A murder is solved in What Dies in Summer. In Love, Simon the main character experiences his coming out of the closet as a gay man. Two of the three novels have already been turned into movie versions.
